Traveling to/from Mumbai? Runway closures may affect your flights

Runway maintenance works are set to commence at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in India later this week. While the schedule for runway closures has been agreed amongst the airport operator, Indian aviation authorities and the airlines, and is planned to cause minimal disruptions, here's what you should keep in mind, nonetheless.

The maintenance works start Tuesday, 18 October 2016 and are expected to go on till 28 November 2016. The runway will therefore be closed according to the following schedule:
  • 1200 hrs to 1700 hrs on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 18 and 30 October 2016
  • 1200 hrs to 1700 hrs on Mondays and Thursdays between 31 October and 28 November 2016.

The closure affects the runways and so aircraft will not be able to depart or land during the closure times noted above. However, the airport terminal and facilities inside will continue to operate as usual.

Individual airlines have put up advisories on their websites, and may be contacting travelers individually, to advise on the consequences of the runway closure on their own flights.

Indigo and Go Air have cancelled or scheduled flights. Jet Airways hasn't specified the flights affected, but they've indicated this on their website:
In light of the forthcoming closure of the Mumbai Airport runway with effect from Oct 18, 2016 until end-November, we have revised our flight schedules for some of our flights arriving into/ departing from Mumbai. Our Contact Centre is proactively keeping guests updated of the revised timings and re-accommodation on alternate flights where necessary, via SMS or phone calls.
We request all guests to please report at least 2 hours prior to departure for timely check-in and to enable us maintain the on-time departure of your flight.
For further information on flights during this period kindly call our Contact Centre or reach out to your travel agent.

Bottom line

If you're traveling to, from or via Mumbai airport during the closure dates and times, now's probably a good time to check your flight status. And if you're traveling at any time during the closure period from 18 October to 28 November 2016, do be mindful of the collateral effects of the schedule changes - airport facilities are likely to be stretched more than usually.
