Some great economy class fares from the US to Indian sub-continent, courtesy Singapore Air and Etihad

We have a rather large reader base in the US (second only to India), and I wanted to do them a good turn to write about some fare sales currently happening, for travel from the US to India / the Indian sub-continent. What makes it more interesting is the fairly wide travel window - between September 2016 and June 2017.


These may be useful for folks in the US that usually come back over to India during the Christmas break, or indeed any others that have India on their travel plans soon.

The Great Singapore Airlines Getaway

SQ is offering round trip fares from San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and Houston, to various destinations in India including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Trivandrum, Kochi, Coimbatore and Visakhapatnam.


The promotional fares are available from 1 to 30 September 2016 for travel from 1 November 2016 to 30 June 2017. Blackout dates apply for Economy Class from 9 December 2016 to 8 January 2017. All Business Class fares require a minimum of 2 passengers travelling on the same itinerary.

Here are the lowest available fares by travel class.


The premium economy and business class fares appear to be on the higher side. However, normal economy class fares from say, SFO to India I think the economy fares offer pretty good value.

Etihad's Explore a World of Experiences sale

Etihad is running a global sale as well, offering up to 50% discounts for bookings done by 6 September 2016, for travel between 18 September 2016 and 30 June 2017 - which is a pretty wide window.


Here are some of the key T&Cs for this sale.
  • These fares are valid for booking until 06 September, 2016 and for travel as shown above. 
  • Fares are inclusive of applicable taxes and fuel surcharges, the break down will be shown during the online booking process. 
  • Flight/Day restriction and Blackout periods may apply.
  • Weekend surcharges may apply.
  • Blackout period:
    • Outbound Dates: 31 December 2016 – 10 January 2017 
    • Inbound Dates: 09 December – 25 December 2016 , 31 December 2016 – 10 January 2017.

Etihad also has other offers going on in parallel. You can access all of these on Etihad's US page, here, and here are all their deals. 

In particular, they have some really amazing fares particularly for travel between November 2016 and January 2017, when fares to India typically skyrocket. For instance, I've been able to locate sub $800 fares to India on Etihad.


Bottom line

Fares from the US to India / Indian sub-continent can go up to US$ 1200 or more during December / January. These fares - particularly in economy class - can offer significant value for such travel. However, the booking window is limited, especially Etihad's sale which ends 6 September 2016. So you'll have to close your plans pretty soon, if you want to make good use of these fares.

IHG promotion for 2x points on all in-hotel spends

IHG's Accelerate 2016 promotion will close by the end of April 2016. And while they've announced the next promotion - Share Forever - which is applicable to residents in North and South America, there isn't a specific promotion for other geographies, except for the book directly promotion that offers up to 30,000 points for 3 stays in Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. Instead, IHG has come up with a promotion that rewards members with 2x IHG Rewards Club points on all in-hotel spending, till 31 December 2016. So instead of the usual 10 points per $, members will earn 20 points per $ spent on all in-hotel items added to the folio. Of all the reasons to scrap a flight...and not just any flight

At 7,807 miles, Air India's AI191 from BOM to EWR may not be anywhere near the longest scheduled and operating commercial flight in the world. But it is, along with UA49, the longest flight ex-India, and it is on the verge of being cancelled. The reason? Billboards (hoardings). That's right. There are three billboards of supposedly unreasonable height on the main road that runs perpendicular to the main runway at BOM. And so, the 340-seater B777-300ER aircraft that plies this BOM-EWR route cannot be loaded beyond 260 passengers, due to reasons of take-off weight, so that it can safely clear this billboard.
