Jet Airways' 72 hour sale now open

Jet Airways has announced a 72-hour sale valid for bookings between 24 August and 26 August 2016, for travel on or after 14 September 2016. This sale is valid for domestic economy class only. Here's our take on the promotion.




My summary view is that the sale is actually quite reasonable, because Jet Airways' fares are quite comparable with those of low-fare airlines.

For instance, here's Chennai to Delhi fare comparison for 15/16 September 2016.

The only (and big) drawback of the promotion is that the fares are W class. Under Jet Airways' new Fare Choices, this means (among other things):
  • only 25% mileage accrual
  • no waivers on change fee, cancellations, etc for the most part
  • no additional baggage irrespective
  • no lounge access

Clearly, status with Jet Airways isn't as valuable as it used to be.

Here are the T&Cs of this promotion:
  • Fares are applicable for one way and return journeys in Economy on flights within India operated by Jet Airways
  • Tickets must be purchased between Aug 24, 2016 and Aug 26, 2016
  • Travel must commence on or after Sep 14, 2016
  • Applicable on select booking class - W
  • Applicable on direct flights only
  • Child / infant discount, date change, flight change, refund charges, weekend surcharge, black out period, travel restriction and / or flight restriction will be applicable as mentioned in the fare rule
  • This offer cannot be combined with any other offer and / or promotion
  • Jet Airways reserves the right at any time, without prior notice to add, alter, modify, change or vary all or any of these terms and conditions or to replace wholly or in part, the above offer by another offer, whether similar to above offer or not, or to withdraw it altogether
There are advantages booking Jet Airways as opposed to a low-fare airline. This point was made (quite clearly, I thought) by Colin Neubronner, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Jet Airways, during the launch of Jet Airways' #GetMore campaign earlier this year in June, when he said...
"...But the actual monetary value that Jet Airways provides in terms of the food and beverage that we serve is about $3. For those who are members of our privilege miles programme they get miles on flights whether it is long or short haul which gives an adjusted value of $6. Then there is the lounge (the cost of) which has gone up tremendously. If you add up $3 from the food and $ 6 from the miles and $ 11 from the lounge you save $ 20 which is about Rs 1,300. What our consumer gets is four times of the Rs 200-300 price differential.”


So, yes. There are clear benefits to be had, when booking under this sale.

I, for one, am thinking of this sale as an opportunity for mileage runs (read: tier points runs) if you're short on tier points.

I checked out of the Hyatt Regency Paris Etoile yesterday morning, and checked into the Le Meridien Etoile, just around the corner from the Hyatt, in the evening after a day's sightseeing. Hyatt was kind enough to hold my bags for the duration of the day (which is a surprise in today's world of terror threats), and I'm grateful to them for that. Kolkata's new terminal, and what a relief! (And lots of pictures)

For the longest time, Kolkata (CCU) had pathetic terminals – both for domestic and international flights – and it was high time they did something about it. Now, the Airports Authority of India must be complimented on the new Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. The airport is really fresh, swanky, and actually makes the flying experience in and out of CCU a whole lot better. The new terminal is an integrated terminal for domestic and international flights, and set out in an wide “V” with unequal arms, the longer arm being the domestic side. The terminal building itself is at one end of the runway, and is to the right of the old terminal, when viewed from the city side (left from airside). This picture, courtesy Wikipedia, shows it quite clearly. I flew in on SG 323 ( trip report here ), and on reaching CCU, we parked at the apron, though sufficient aerobridges appeared available. Defunct airlines of India - Part 1

ASan and I met for lunch over the weekend. If you knew us personally, you'd know that we're both forever thirsty, if you get my meaning. You'd also know that there are always discussions around ideas for posts. Most of them are flights of fancy (pun intended!), and almost always unviable.
