Transfer SPG Starpoints to AAdvantage for a 20% bonus

American Airlines has announced a pretty awesome promotion for transfer of their SPG points to American Airlines AAdvantage Program, which gives you a 20% bonus upon transfer. There are some conditions attached, so do read on.

SPG points transfer to American Airlines in a 1:1 ratio. Essentially, this promotion is by American AAdvantage, which gives you the 20% bonus miles on all SPG Starpoints transferred. There is no minimum Starpoint transfer requirement for Platinum members. Gold members have a minimum transfer requirement of 1,500 Starpoints, and Preferred members have a minimum transfer requirement of 2,500 Starpoints. In addition, SPG automatically adds a 25% bonus when you transfer in multiples of 20,000 starpoints (up to 79,999 per day per member), across all its transfer partners.

In effect, if you transfer 20,000 SPG points to AAdvantage, you get a total of 30,000 miles from:

  • 20,000 miles you've transferred,
  • 5,000 miles from SPG (for every 20,000 Starpoints transferred), and
  • 5,000 bonus miles under this current promotion.

The offer is valid for transfers till 14 September, 2016. You can access the promotion here, and transfer SPG Starpoints from here.

Personally I don’t transfer SPG miles to any program, as I love using them for hotel award nights. But if you have an upcoming trip that require AAdvantage miles, I think this is a great offer.

From an Indian context, American Airlines doesn't have a direct service to India. However, American is a member airline of oneWorld, which means you can use AAdvantage miles to redeem for award tickets on other oneWorld carriers like Cathay Pacific, British Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar airways.

Another great thing about AAdvantage miles is that you use them for non-OW partners who have a code share with American Airlines, like Etihad Airways. So you can use American Airlines miles for an Etihad Business flight from multiple cities in India. Last year I used AA miles to book my parents a CCU-AUH-JFK in business class on Etihad Airways.

There is no registration required for this offer. Just log into your SPG account and go for it.
