Buy JPmiles with 40% bonus till 31 August 2016

Jet Privilege has been running JPmiles sales every even month of this year, each with a bonus offer. First was the February offer with a 40% bonus, then the April offer with a 40% bonus (going up to 50% if you were the top buyer of the day), and finally the June offer – again for a 40% bonus.

Here's another such offer for up to 40% bonus on the purchase of JP miles. This offer is valid for purchases till 31 August 2016.

Jet Privilege sells miles at Rs 1.25 apiece, plus taxes, which brings up the total cost to Rs 1.4375 a mile. There's a minimum purchase requirement of 500 miles, which is fine.

As with earlier promotions, there's a graded bonus as:

  • no bonus up to 2999 miles
  • 3000-9999 miles - 10%
  • 10000-19999 miles - 20%
  • 20000-29999 miles - 30%
  • 30000+ miles - 40%

At the highest level, the 40% bonus means the cost per mile comes down to just over a rupee, at Rs 1.02 each.

Fare Choices and JPmiles purchases

This is the first JPmiles sale after Fare Choices was introduced. Fare Choices provides Jet Airways to differentiate, to some extent, the benefits it provides to its passengers and Jet Privilege, based on the fare they've paid for their flights. Unfortunately (for us), this means that it allows Jet to hold more inventory in lower inventory buckets, which (a) results in lower overheads on benefits to passengers, but more importantly (b) helps them compete directly on price, with low-fare airlines.

Net effect, you'll find that low fares are here to stay, and that often means fewer benefits, even if you're JP Platinum or Gold. In this context, it is often cheaper (if it wasn't already) to actually buy a paid fare than an award ticket, for most economy class travel.

Bottom line

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, that JPmiles are best suited for last-minute bookings (both economy and business class) when paid fares can sky-rocket (but miles required don't), or for most bookings in business class (where the paid fares are generally high in any case).

I always recommend that one should not buy miles speculatively, but only when there's an imminent or upcoming need to use miles - a situation when using purchased miles will be more cost effective than buying a paid fare, or if you're topping off an account that already has miles in order to book an award ticket.

Comments

  1. “The good part about this promotion is that the bonus is not graded, unlike in the case of some earlier promotions. All miles purchases earn a flat 40% bonus, which means the cost per mile comes down to just over a rupee, at Rs 1.02 each.”

The above is incorrect. The bonus earning is graded, although not publicized. The grading can be seen from purchase JP miles option landing page on the Jetprivilege website.

    1. You're quite right. However, when we tested this at the time of posting, the result was always 40%, so we assumed that was the case. Rectified now after re-testing.
