25% JP miles back on business class domestic award tickets
Jet Airways / Jet Privilege has launched a promotion that gives you 25% of your miles back, when you redeem JP miles for business class award tickets on select sectors within India. The promotion requires tickets to be booked by 30 June 2016, for travel between 1 July and 30 September 2016.
Not all domestic sectors qualify for this promotion. The specific city-pairs are available in a drop-down menu on their landing page for this offer, here. Here are some indicative routes from the metro cities:
- ex-Delhi: Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Kolkata, Guwahati, Indore, Bagdogra, Chandigarh, Jammu, Patna, Udaipur, Varanasi, Visakhapatnam
- ex-Mumbai: Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Kozhikode, Coimbatore, Kochi, Dehra Dun, Indore, Chandigarh, Mangalore, Jaipur, Lucknow, Raipur, Trivandrum, Udaipur, Vishakhapatnam
- ex-Chennai: Kolkata, Port Blair, Pune
- ex-Kolkata: Bangalore, Guwahati, Bagdogra, Port Blair, Chennai
- ex-Bangalore: Kolkata, Mangalore, Pune, Trivandrum
- ex-Hyderabad: Pune
- ex-Pune: Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai.
For instance, Kolkata-Bangalore (available only via Mumbai, no direct flights), and would normally cost 21,000 JP miles for an award ticket in business class. Under this promotion, it would cost a net 15,750 miles, as against a cash price upwards of Rs 26,000. That's a pay-back per mile of about Rs 1.65, which is more than twice our normal valuation for JP Miles, of Rs 0.72!
Just remember that the miles-back could take 3-4 weeks to post to your account, and you'll need to have the full number of miles (without the 25% discount) at the time of booking.
Pre-departure beverages (non-alcoholic) in domestic business class
Looking at the travel period (the leanest quarter in Indian aviation), I believe this is a way to fill up seats, while at the same time, reduce the number of unutilised JP miles on their balance sheet (resulting in a reduction of liabilities, making the balance sheet a bit stronger). Can't blame them for trying!

The biggest downside of this promotion is that city pairings are restricted to 82 sectors, and that doesn't include some of the mainstream sectors (eg, Mumbai-Delhi). That said, the 25% discount (which is what the miles back are, in effect) is pretty good. In my view, JP miles provide some excellent value when redeemed for domestic business class or international sectors (including on partner airlines), and this promo meets one of those requirements.
Interestingly, earlier this week Jet Privilege inadvertently made the same offer for bookings by 22 June 2016, for travel between 23 June and 30 September 2016, before they recalled that promotion. Having said that, this new promotion (only the dates have changed) appears to be live now.
In all, given the value you'll be getting for your JP miles, I believe this is a fantastic promotion!
