Etihad and Jet Airways global sale up to 30% off

I have been remiss in not writing about this offer earlier, considering there's only 2 more days left to book. But better late than never, right? So I thought I should alert readers on a global sale for up to 30% off, by both Etihad and Jet Airways. There are specific conditions and restrictions for each, so read on for more.


Etihad's sale

This sale is valid for bookings until 4 May 2016, for travel between 15 May 2016 and 28 February 2017, which is a nine-month long period - quite generous, if you are the types who know your exact travel dates well in advance. These are special fares and are subject to availability. 

Going by Etihad's page for this sale, this is applicable only for travel from specific cities in India - Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, and Mumbai. I'm not sure why the other cities in India that Etihad operates to/from have been excluded.

The sale is valid on both economy and business class bookings.

Fares are inclusive of applicable taxes, the break down will be shown during the online booking process. Here are the T&Cs:
  • The fares mentioned above are ‘starting from’ fares and are valid for booking until 4 May 2016.
  • These are special fares and are subject to availability.
  • Fares are inclusive of applicable taxes, the break down will be shown during the online booking process.
  • Fares are correct at the time of publication; however, the levels may vary based on fluctuations in the tax amount.
  • Valid visas and travel documents are the responsibility of our guests.
  • Please check the individual fare rules for detailed terms and conditions.
  • Flight/day restriction and blackout periods may apply.
  • The airport taxes are subject to change without prior notice and will be confirmed at the time of booking.
  • Weekend surcharges may apply.

Jet Airways' sale

Jet is also running a sale for up to 30% on all international destinations. This sale is valid for bookings until 4 May 2016, for travel between 12 June 2016 (almost a month after Etihad's start date for travel) and 28 February 2017,

 The only thing is that the flights must be:
  • on Jet Airways itself, or 
  • an international connection via AUH, with an onward journey on an Etihad-operated flight, or
  • codeshare flights of Jet Airways operated by Etihad.

The sale is valid on both economy and business class bookings. Interestingly, travel between India and Paris is also applicable on codeshare flights with Air France.

Here are the other main T&Cs:
  • Travel must commence and the entire journey must be completed between Jun 12, 2016 and Feb 28, 2017
  • Travel is not permitted during blackout period as mentioned in the fare rule
  • Child discount, date change, flight change and / or refund charges will be applicable as mentioned in the fare rule
  • Discount is applicable on select booking classes
    • Première - P
    • Economy - W
  • Limited seats available on a first come, first serve basis

Conclusion

Jet makes it a point to clarify that this offer is available only when purchased online on www.jetairways.com or using their mobile app. I didn't find any such reservation in Etihad's sale, so presumably the sale fares apply to bookings through travel agents also.

Based on a quick check of prices, the actual discounts seem to vary between 15-25%. I think these discounts are great, especially if you're able to plan well in advance and stick to your travel dates. This is useful because of the travel period of the offer, which is till 28 February 2017. Now that's a really long time!

IHG promotion for 2x points on all in-hotel spends

IHG's Accelerate 2016 promotion will close by the end of April 2016. And while they've announced the next promotion - Share Forever - which is applicable to residents in North and South America, there isn't a specific promotion for other geographies, except for the book directly promotion that offers up to 30,000 points for 3 stays in Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. Instead, IHG has come up with a promotion that rewards members with 2x IHG Rewards Club points on all in-hotel spending, till 31 December 2016. So instead of the usual 10 points per $, members will earn 20 points per $ spent on all in-hotel items added to the folio. Of all the reasons to scrap a flight...and not just any flight

At 7,807 miles, Air India's AI191 from BOM to EWR may not be anywhere near the longest scheduled and operating commercial flight in the world. But it is, along with UA49, the longest flight ex-India, and it is on the verge of being cancelled. The reason? Billboards (hoardings). That's right. There are three billboards of supposedly unreasonable height on the main road that runs perpendicular to the main runway at BOM. And so, the 340-seater B777-300ER aircraft that plies this BOM-EWR route cannot be loaded beyond 260 passengers, due to reasons of take-off weight, so that it can safely clear this billboard.
