Spice Club - The program that devalued two months after its launch!

Don't we all hate devaluations? At least some of them come with advance notice. This one doesn't; the only saving grace is that it isn't a frequent flier program!

In February this year, SpiceJet launched Spice Club, a rewards-and-benefits program. I'll be the first to admit that this isn't your normal loyalty program, though they're trying to drive some sort of loyalty - or at least customer acquisition - through this program. The essence of the deal was that for a fee of Rs 399, you get a host of benefits that is valued (by SpiceJet) at up to Rs 10,000. Even assuming that this value is a bit exaggerated, the value earned was clearly in excess of Rs 399, so it made sense.

Cut to today. Within two months after its launch, SpiceJet has already changed the terms of the Spice Club program. In effect, it represents a devaluation, though you still get sufficient bang for your buck, as it were.

First, they've upped the price by Rs 200, or 50%, so the membership now costs you Rs 599. Remember, that this is valid for a year. Secondly, they've cut down the benefits value by a staggering Rs 4,000, or 40%, to Rs 5,999. The benefits you get are the same as before (except for the value of free vouchers). Check this out:
  • 2 free vouchers worth Rs.599 each to be used for domestic flight bookings (at Rs.1198) - this used to be Rs 399 per voucher earlier, or a total value of Rs 798
  • Free Air Ticket on Member's Birthday
  • Marriage Anniversary Special - 50% off on Domestic Air Tickets for 2 passengers - maximum discount of Rs 2,000 - there was no cap earlier on the discount value
  • Free Priority Check-in
  • Add-ons* Special- 2 vouchers worth Rs.100 each to be used for domestic flight bookings
  • Preferred communication for any SpiceJet Promo Sale.

You can access the web page for Spice Club here.

The reduction in overall advertised value of benefits seems to be stemming almost entirely from the marriage anniversary special (50% discount for 2 passengers), given that the only other change is actually an increase in the benefits value (of the 2 free vouchers).

My guess is someone either forgot to include a cap on the marriage anniversary special part of the promo earlier, or folks with marriage anniversaries in February, March and April applied and abused the card excessively! I think it is the former, though I won't put the latter past many of our folks!!!
