SPG has announced its next promotion: 2x / 3x Starpoints + possible 1000 bonus points for weekend stays

Starwood has announced Triple Up, a new promotion starting 9 May 2016, valid for stays till 31 July 2016. Registration is required, and will open starting 3 May 2016 and close on 17 July 2016. They're offering 3x Starpoints at all Sheraton hotels, 2x Starpoints at all other SPG properties, and a further 1,000 Starpoints for weekend stays.

SPG's previous promotion - Take Two - which ends on 30 April 2016, started out rather weak, offering 2x Starpoints on stays of 2 or more nights, plus 250 Starpoints a night at select hotels. They enhanced this later by tacking on bonus thresholds for staying 15-24 nights (2500 Starpoints) and beyond 25 nights (7500 Starpoints), which made it more bearable!

This new promotion for May-July 2016 continues to offer 2x Starpoints, though the highlight is the 3x Starpoints at Sheratons. The additional bonus of 1,000 Starpoints for weekend stays applies only for stays of 2 nights or more, that include Friday and Saturday nights (Thursday and Friday nights in the Middle East).

You can register for the Triple Up promotion here, once registrations open.

Here's a list of all participating hotels for this promotion, and here are the full T&Cs.

In India, Starwood affiliates with 53 hotels, with several more on the way. All of these hotels, including the recently included Design Hotels in India, are participating in this promotion, with the exception of:
  • ITC Sonar, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Kolkata
  • The Park Chennai, A Member Of Design Hotels
  • The Park Kolkata, A Member Of Design Hotels
  • The Park New Delhi, A Member Of Design Hotels.

However, there's only a limited opportunity for 3x points in India, since there are only three Sheraton hotels:
  • Sheraton Grand Bangalore Hotel At Brigade Gateway
  • Sheraton New Delhi Hotel
  • Sheraton Hyderabad Hotel

Conclusion

In January, I had valued SPG Starpoints at Rs 1.67 apiece. In my next valuation, I expect this to drop further because of SPG's hotel category changes that took effect from 1 March 2016

With that in mind, this promotion is not spectacularly appealing, at least to me. Most promotions end up offering 2x points in one way or another, which is what this promotion largely does - particularly in India. The ability to earn more than that is fairly limited.

Nonetheless, just so you don't miss out on any bonuses, you should register for this promotion (as is the case with any others).

Readers: What's your take on this promotion? Is it good enough for you to consider moving some stays to SPG hotels?
