IHG announce Point Breaks for booking till 31 July 2016

IHG Rewards Club just announced their next set of hotels on Point Breaks, valid for bookings till 31 July 2016. Point Breaks are awesome value, because you can book award nights for a flat price of 5,000 IHG Rewards Club points apiece.

You can find the list of current Point Breaks offers here. As I mentioned earlier, these are available to book through 31 July 2016. However, limited availability means these hotels can run out of rooms under Point Breaks, pretty quickly, so you should get into the act fast.

Hotels in India this time round are:

HIX Ahmedabad currently retails for about Rs 3,600++ a night, for random dates in early June 2016.

HI Hotel & Suites Bangalore is available at Rs 4,675++ a night, for random dates in early June 2016.

According to our January 2016 points and miles valuations, we valued IHG Rewards Club points at Rs 0.26 each. So, 5,000 points values at Rs 1,300, which is far lower than the cash rates you'd pay at these hotels.

Intecontinental Marine Drive, Mumbai

You can also buy IHG points at the following rates, in increments of 1,000 points:
  • 1,000 - 10,000 points for $13.50 per 1,000 points (effectively, Rs 0.918 per point)
  • 11,000 - 25,000 points for $12.50 per 1,000 points (effectively, Rs 0.850 per point)
  • 26,000 - 60,000 points for $11.50 per 1,000 points (effectively, Rs 0.782 per point)

Naturally, these rates are quite high when you consider the value of IHG points in India, of Rs 0.26.

Conclusion

If you have (or want to have!) travel coming up to Ahmedabad or Bangalore, this edition of Point Breaks could work very well for you.

In any case, I wouldn't generally recommend buying points specifically to redeem them for award nights. Having said that, some Point Breaks redemptions can be really worth buying points for, such as the one time when the Intercontinental Marine Drive, Mumbai (priced upwards of Rs 9,000 or US$150 at the time) was available on Point Breaks. But such opportunities are few and far between.
