Other minor changes to Jet Privilege charges

Jet Privilege recently made some changes to the charges for some of its services. Unfortunately, in the excitement (and subsequent dampening of spirits) around partner award changes, these were left in the background. All of these changes are effective 1 April 2016.

In summary, changes have been made to the charges levied in respect of re-issuance of award, cancellation of award tickets on Jet Airways operated flights, and for other services such as issuance of new bag tags.

Re-issuance related charges

Re-issuance relates to: Changes in name or class of travel, and changes to any segment /sector or routing.

Currently, such changes prior to commencement of travel (which therefore require ticket re-issuance) incur a cancellation / reissue fee of 500 JPMiles for each ticket change. In such cases, the original award ticket has to be cancelled for issuance of a revised award ticket. These charges are waived for JP Gold and Platinum members.

The new charge for this is 750 miles. Also, the waiver is now restricted only to JP Platinum members (ie, Gold members will now incur this charge).

Cancellation of award tickets

Similarly, cancellations of award tickets on Jet Airways operated flights (as opposed to partner awards, which are non-refundable upon cancellation) currently incur charges as follows:
  • cancellation before 1 hour of the flight: 500 JP miles
  • cancellation within 1 hour of the flight: 50% of the award miles
  • others, no show, etc: 100% of the award miles.

JP Gold and Platinum members are currently exempt from these charges.

Going forward (ie from 1 April 2016), cancellations will attract a penalty of 2,000 JP miles. It is not clear if this is restricted to only cancellations before 1 hour of the flight, or all cancellations. As with re-issuance charges, waiver of cancellation charges is now restricted only to JP Platinum members (ie, Gold members will now incur this charge).

New bag tags

JP Silver, Gold and Platinum members are currently entitled to 2 bag tags on upgrade / renewal of their tier. While that will continue, going forward, new bag tags will now be charged at 250 JP miles for all members. I personally don't see much point in having too many bag tags, so this one's not of great importance, I imagine.

Conclusion

The significant changes are the huge increase in cancellation charges (up from 500 to 2,000 JP miles) and the fact that JP Gold members are not entitled for waiver of these (or other) charges. To be honest, I'm not sure what the reasons for these changes are, but I assume there are way too many Gold level members (after the relaxed norms for earning elite tiers), and Jet is losing out on a lot of potential charges.
