Another of those fare sales from Etihad - up to 30% off

Etihad's been running a fair number of sales and promotions lately. Towards the latter part of 2015, it was the 4x, 3x and 2x miles promotion (which itself was the third bonus miles promotion of 2015), and the 2-for-1 business class sale, followed by their first sale of 2016 for up to 30% discount, in February this year. The latest is the Spring Sale, valid for bookings till 23 March 2016, on both economy and business class travel ex-India, for travel between 5 April 2016 and 12 December 2016.


You can head to the landing page here to make the booking, and also to get an indication of the prices for various routes. I've summarised them below, since there are other promotions also that are listed on that landing page (click below for a larger image).

Here are the terms of the offer:
  • These fares are valid for booking until 23 March, 2016 and for travel as shown above.
  • Offers are subject to availability at the time of booking online with Etihad Airways, these are special fares with limited availability.
  • Fares are inclusive of applicable taxes and fuel surcharges, the break down will be shown during the online booking process. Fares are correct at the time of publication; however, the levels may vary based on fluctuations in the tax amount.
  • Valid visas and travel documents are the responsibility of our Guests.
  • Please check the individual fare rules for detailed terms and conditions.
  • Flight/Day restriction and Blackout periods may apply.
  • The Airport taxes are subject to change without prior notice and will be confirmed at the time of booking.

In all, these aren't spectacularly great fares, but they do work for some specific city combinations. Expect Jet Airways' release on a similar offer, soon!

IHG promotion for 2x points on all in-hotel spends

IHG's Accelerate 2016 promotion will close by the end of April 2016. And while they've announced the next promotion - Share Forever - which is applicable to residents in North and South America, there isn't a specific promotion for other geographies, except for the book directly promotion that offers up to 30,000 points for 3 stays in Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. Instead, IHG has come up with a promotion that rewards members with 2x IHG Rewards Club points on all in-hotel spending, till 31 December 2016. So instead of the usual 10 points per $, members will earn 20 points per $ spent on all in-hotel items added to the folio. Of all the reasons to scrap a flight...and not just any flight

At 7,807 miles, Air India's AI191 from BOM to EWR may not be anywhere near the longest scheduled and operating commercial flight in the world. But it is, along with UA49, the longest flight ex-India, and it is on the verge of being cancelled. The reason? Billboards (hoardings). That's right. There are three billboards of supposedly unreasonable height on the main road that runs perpendicular to the main runway at BOM. And so, the 340-seater B777-300ER aircraft that plies this BOM-EWR route cannot be loaded beyond 260 passengers, due to reasons of take-off weight, so that it can safely clear this billboard.
