20% bonus when you purchase 5000 JP miles or more - till 23 March

Jet Privilege is on a bonus-awarding spree for its members. In early February 2016, there was this offer for a 40% bonus on JP miles purchased, which has since closed. There's also this currently ongoing promotion (valid till 15 April 2015) for transferring partner miles to JP, with a bonus of up to 30%. Here's another - but limited time - offer for a flat 20% bonus on JP miles purchased, valid till 23 March 2016, on a minimum purchase of 5,000 JP miles.

I value JP miles at Rs 0.72 per mile, and Jet Privilege sells JP miles at Rs 1.25 per mile plus taxes (which works out to about Rs 1.43 per mile, or literally twice my value). Under this promotion, the price per JP mile (after considering the 20% bonus) works out to Rs 1.1925.

I personally consider this to be on the expensive end of the price range, if you're looking to buy JP miles speculatively. Having said that, and as I keep insisting every time:
  • there are some routes (especially before JP miles are devalued on international partner redemptions after 31 March 2016, but also some after that) where buying JP miles at this current pricing may still offer some good value, and
  • miles at the margin are worth far more than their cash cost (that is to say, the last few miles you need for an award ticket are worth a much higher price, simply because it makes that award available to you immediately).

So yes, there are circumstances under which one could come out ahead by buying miles under this promotion. But YMMV.
