Has IHG changed their Accelerate 2016 promo without notice? Not that I mind!

I quite like promotions like IHG's Accelerate (such as their opening promotion for 2016). Targeted promotions like these are pretty useful when it comes to identifying what it might take to qualify for the full bonus, and to see if the achievement goals they've set can actually be met. Sometimes, it is also an intellectual challenge to see how best one can get the best / most out of the promotion, with minimal effort (or fewest possible stays or spend). However, what also seems to be a challenge is to see if IHG has changed - or at least tweaked - the targeted offers.

I noticed this only today, and only because I have reason to book a couple of stays with them. You see, I've completed a part of my offers without having to do mattress runs (yet), with my stays at the Crowne Plaza, Gurgaon and the Holiday Inn Delhi Aerocity airport hotel (which I'm yet to write about). So I was hoping that if I could structure some of my upcoming stays, I'd be able to qualify for the bonus points rather easily.

To recap, here's what I received as my offer:

Notice the following:
  • the January Bonus offer is quite clearly distinct (in appearance) from the other offers.
  • there are only 4 other offers, ie, excluding the January Bonus Offer
  • the achievement bonus language states: Complete 3 of the 4 offers above and earn n(an additional) 34,9000 bonus points (excluding the January Bonus Offer). This seems logical since I have only 4 offers, going by the look of things.
  • the achievement bonus clearly excludes the January Bonus offer, which again adds to the logic of the overall offer.

And here's what it says today:

And just like that, of the 4 has become 3 of the 5

Given the manner of presentation of the previous offer vis-a-vis this one,,, my initial reaction was that there seemed to be something interesting out here. I saw two possibilities:
  1. This is an error, and should actually state 3 of the 4, and not 3 of the 5. That means that, consistent with the original offer, the January Bonus Offer is not part of the milestones at all. In that case, IHG will correct this sooner than later, but I'm not sure if they've been notified of this error - assuming that it is indeed an error.
  2. This is not an error. The January Bonus Offer is indeed one of the milestones, but the 34,900 bonus points I stand to gain excludes the January Bonus Offer. Wow! Now that would be quite generous. It would also mean that in my case, having completed 3 milestones, I'll only need to complete one more milestone, and the easiest way to do that would be to rack up some F&B spend.

And then I noticed the header bar showing overall status.

Colour me confounded! Now, I have 6 offers?

It has taken me the better part of half hour to figure out what all this could mean. And while I've written to IHG seeking clarification, I'd like to posit as follows, which is really the only way I can address all the seemingly inconsistent information coherently:
  • There is indeed a change to the offer.
  • The change is, in my case, favourable to the customer.
  • The 6 offers in the header bar includes the January Bonus Offer and the Achievement Bonus.
  • The January Bonus Offer is one of the 5 targeted milestones for me, of which I need to achieve at least 3 to qualify for the 34,900 bonus points.
  • I've completed 2 of the offers, and need to complete just one more to earn the Achievement Bonus.

Now, to wait for IHG's response.

Readers: Have you seen any changes to your initial IHG Accelerate 2016 offer?

  1. Hi, How do IHG define a stay and Weekend Stay? is 1 night stay is counted as a stay, i.e. Checking-in on Day 1 and Checking-Out on Day 2 ? Also, for Weekend stay, do I need to stay both Sat and Sunday night to fulfill this offer.."Stay 2 weekend(s), including a Saturday night and another night, and earn 2,000 bonus points". Thanks
