Two SPG bonus points promotions, possibly stackable

SPG is currently running two promotions for bonus points, that I thought would be relevant in view of the upcoming vacation season. As far as I can tell, these are stackable, but YMMV, and I’ll explain why, later in this post.

Stay for More

The Stay for More promotion offers 2x points for stays of 2 or more nights. Also, a stay of 3 or more nights earns you a further 500 bonus points.

Registration is required (access here) on or before 6 December 2015. I strongly suggest immediate registration, because it won’t hurt. There are some non-participating hotels, which are listed here. For India, these are:
  • Four Points by Sheraton Ahmedabad
  • Sheraton Grand Bangalore Hotel at Brigade Gateway
  • Sheraton Hyderabad Hotel
  • The Westin Chennai Velachery
  • The Westin Gurgaon, New Delhi
  • The Westin Mumbai Garden City
  • The Westin Sohna Resort & Spa

The full T&Cs are here.

Bonus points promotion

SPG is also running a targeted bonus points promotion offering a certain number of bonus points for 3 stays between 1 October 2015 and 31 December 2015. Registration is required before 30 November 2015.

You can find out the offer you’re targeted for, here. Generally, the total bonus points offered is 7,500, though the actual earning per stay varies. For instance, my promotion is as follows:
  • 1,500 bonus Starpoints on your first stay
  • 2,500 bonus Starpoints on your second stay
  • 3,500 bonus Starpoints on your third stay

7,500 bonus points isn’t much, but can get you a free night’s stay at a Category 3 or lower hotel. You can see all SPG category hotels here, and I’ve written about SPG India properties here.

As I mentioned earlier, this promotion is targeted. That is to say, SPG seems to be running this promotion in waves. So it is possible that you've been targeted already, which might make you ineligible for this promotion.

Analysis

In theory, one could combine the 2 promotions above. SPG offers 2 Starpoints per $1 of eligible spend. At a room night rate of say Rs 6,500 (that’s $100), the base earning would therefore be 200 Starpoints a night. Assuming 3 stays of 3 nights each, stacking the 2 promotions would fetch me points as follows:

  • 3 stays x 3 nights x 200 points per night = 1,800 base points
  • 2x for each of the 3 stays (ie, 1x bonus) = 1,800 bonus points
  • 500 points for each 3-night stay = 1,500 bonus points
  • 7,500 bonus points under the 2nd promotion = 7,500 bonus points

That’s a total of 12,600 points, comprising 1,800 base points and 10,800 bonus points. If each stay was for 2 nights (instead of 3 nights each), I’d still be able to earn a total of 11,100 points (I won’t earn the 500 bonus points per stay). But either of those will turn out to be rather expensive, so this one isn't for me.

Would you try to do a mattress run (or three!) to earn 12,600 Starpoints?
