Air India accelerated award ticket promotion on domestic flights

Air India isn't really known for innovative promotions, though the AI-SBI credit card that they came up with continues to be one of the best mileage earning cards, in my view. The Flying Returns program isn't spectacular, with relatively higher earn to burn ratios than, say, Jet Airways. However, occasionally, they do come up with what they call "schemes", which are really promotions of sorts, that can be interesting. Here's the latest.

You can now earn an economy return ticket for every 10 sectors flown in economy, or a business class return ticket for every 6 sectors flown in business class, with all of the earning related flying taking place before 31 December 2015.

Here's the deal, in AI's own words:

Buy Economy Class tickets through the Air India Website and travel on 10 domestic sectors (e.g., Delhi-Mumbai-Delhi will be considered as two sectors) in economy class within the validity period i.e., 15Oct’15 to 31Dec’15 and get one FREE return ticket (2 coupons only) on domestic sectors in Economy Class operated by Air India Limited including Alliance Air flights. Any change in flight number will be counted as one separate sector/coupon.

Buy Business Class tickets through Air India Website and travel 06 domestic sectors (e.g., Delhi-Mumbai-Delhi will be considered as two sectors) in Business Class within the validity period 15Oct’15 to 31Dec’15 and get one FREE return ticket (2 coupons only) on domestic sectors in Business Class operated by Air India Limited including Alliance Air flights. Any change in flight number will be counted as one separate sector/coupon.

The reward ticket will be valid for Six months only from the date of issuance of ticket or up to 31stJuly, 2016, whichever is earlier. The journey has to be completed before 31st July, 2016.The validity of the reward ticket will not be extended beyond 31stJuly, 2016. The reward ticket can be used by the passenger himself/herself or by his/her nominee.

Bookings must be done on the website at www.airindia.in, and not through other channels such as agents. As long as the earning flights are on separate flight numbers, sector credit will accrue. That is to say, if you're flying DEL-HYD via PNQ, on the same flight number, it will be counted as only one flight. Also, it does not seem to matter which sectors are flown...so in theory, one could fly 5 (or 3 in business class) return flights on an short/inexpensive route and still earn an award ticket that can be used on a much longer segment. You can find the full terms, etc, here.
As to the award ticket, it appears to be a return ticket on a domestic sector, as opposed to vouchers for 2 separate domestic flights (though the landing page does talk about 2 vouchers).

While this isn't the kind of promo that one would do mileage/tier runs for, if you've got nearly enough flights under your belt with AI during this period, then doing a run might help with earning the award ticket.

What's your view? Will you take up this promotion?
