How on earth did I miss this?

I have some travel coming up on Emirates, and as I was checking on a few related things including my hotel bookings, it struck me that there's something I haven't written about. And that's the SPG Emirates World Rewards promotion.

In November 2014, SPG and Emirates came together in a partnership, to offer what's called World Rewards to members of both the SPG and Emirates Skywards programs. I remember reading and registering for it at the time, but how I missed writing about it is quite beyond me. Having said that, its never too late if it is going to result in extra points or miles, so here goes.

SPG launched a similar partnership with Delta (called Crossover rewards) a couple of years back, and the concept is the same that. Essentially, it is a sort of double-dip if you will, that entitles members of SPG and Emirates Rewards programs to earn additional Starpoints or Emirates Skywards miles, if they use the other's services. Let me explain.

Benefits for SPG members

When flying Emirates, SPG members earn the following benefits:
  • SPG Gold and Platinum members earn 1 Starpoint per US Dollar spent on all Emirates flights (in addition to Skywards miles)
  • SPG Platinum members get in-airport benefits such as priority check-in, priority boarding and complimentary e-gate access (not relevant for Indian passport holders).

Benefits for Emirates Skywards members

When staying at SPG hotels, Emirates Skywards members earn the following benefits:
  • Emirates Skywards Silver, Gold and Platinum members earn 1 mile per US Dollar for all eligible stays at Starwood properties worldwide
  • Emirates Gold and Platinum members enjoy additional on-property benefits such as 4 pm late checkout, access to elite check in lines, and complimentary internet access (which should be partially redundant now)
Registration is required, and can be done here.

Here is a video explaining the partnership:

Overall, I think this is a useful benefit to have, and the promotion itself has the ability to drive some level of business both ways. In particular, I would imagine this might be of more benefit to SPG, simply because it is often easier to have a choice of hotels to book rooms at, over airlines.

What do you think? Have you had the chance to benefit from this already?
