Marriott MegaBonus promotion for September 2014 to January 2015

Marriott has announced MegaBonus its promotion for fall 2014, for stays between 15 September 2014 and 15 January 2015, at participating properties.


There was a lot of expectation that this would be like the MegaBonus promotion earlier in 2014, that offered 1 night's stay certificate for every 2 nights' paid stay, but Marriott has disappointed to that extent.

The promotion now is a base offer of 2x points starting with the second paid stay, going up to a total of 25,000 bonus points during the promotion period. This is identical, at least conceptually, to the summer promotion that they ran, called Getaway bonus. However, Loyalty Lobby reports that there are multiple versions of this promo, and while the above is a base level offer, there are other offers that are targeted, being:
  • 2,500 bonus points per stay starting with your second stay for up to 25,000 bonus points.
  • 25,000 bonus points after 12 paid nights + additional 5,000 bonus points after 18 paid nights for total maximum bonus of 30,000 points.
  • 25,000 bonus points after 15 paid nights + additional 15,000 bonus points after 20 paid nights for maximum bonus of 40,000 points.
  • 35,000 bonus points after 20 paid nights + additional 15,000 bonus points after 25 paid nights for a maximum of 50,000 points.
  • 35,000 bonus points after 20 paid nights + additional 2,000 bonus points for every additional paid night (max 10 nights) for total maximum bonus of 55,000 points.

  • A 'stay' is defined as consecutive nights spent at the same hotel, regardless of check-in/check-out activity.
  • Registration is required.
  • The member receiving this offer has been specifically targeted and the offer is not transferable.
  • Bonus points will be awarded to the member's account within 3-5 business days after the qualifying stay.
  • Only one room per hotel is counted toward a member's nights or stay.
  • Members electing to earn miles are not eligible for this promotion.

I entirely forgot about the previous promotion before my stay at the Ritz-Carlton Almaty, which turned out to be my first stay in that promotion. I could've easily doubled those points by doing a mattress run before that stay. But I've learned my lesson, so I can see some MRs happening soon!

IHG promotion for 2x points on all in-hotel spends

IHG's Accelerate 2016 promotion will close by the end of April 2016. And while they've announced the next promotion - Share Forever - which is applicable to residents in North and South America, there isn't a specific promotion for other geographies, except for the book directly promotion that offers up to 30,000 points for 3 stays in Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. Instead, IHG has come up with a promotion that rewards members with 2x IHG Rewards Club points on all in-hotel spending, till 31 December 2016. So instead of the usual 10 points per $, members will earn 20 points per $ spent on all in-hotel items added to the folio. Of all the reasons to scrap a flight...and not just any flight

At 7,807 miles, Air India's AI191 from BOM to EWR may not be anywhere near the longest scheduled and operating commercial flight in the world. But it is, along with UA49, the longest flight ex-India, and it is on the verge of being cancelled. The reason? Billboards (hoardings). That's right. There are three billboards of supposedly unreasonable height on the main road that runs perpendicular to the main runway at BOM. And so, the 340-seater B777-300ER aircraft that plies this BOM-EWR route cannot be loaded beyond 260 passengers, due to reasons of take-off weight, so that it can safely clear this billboard.
