Alitalia is Jet Airways' new codeshare partner

It had to happen! Jet Airways is toeing the Etihad line more and more, each passing day. Etihad, as you are aware, has strategic investments in 7 or 8 airlines globally (and an operational partnership with Philippines Airlines), and so it was only going to be a matter of time before we saw those investee airlines partnering amongst themselves in one way or another.

And so, it is in the order of things that Alitalia - one of Etihad's largest investees - is the newest codeshare partner of Jet Airways.

I suppose it is also only natural. With Air India joining Star Alliance earlier this month, I had predicted earlier that Jet Airways was set to lose a large number of its partners, who are Star Alliance members. You can read that post here. What that meant was that Jet would have had to start looking out for other airline / codeshare partners, and it seems like they've succeeded.

This new codeshare arrangement could also well be an attempted claw-back by Jet, from India to Italy (consider that Air India now has flights from Delhi to Milan and Rome, and Jet withdrew their Delhi-Milan service earlier).

Moving on to the specifics.

Only the following flights with Alitalia qualify as codeshare flights:

So if you're flying from India to Italy or vv, you necessarily have to transit through AUH, to benefit from this codeshare arrangement, which also works for some of the intra-Italy flights on Alitalia. However, that does mean that you get some JP miles and flight counts.

JP miles earned on codeshare flights will be as follows:

And finally, here's how your status with JP will (or won't) be useful if you're flying Alitalia codeshare flights.

The above is fairly consistent with most codeshare arrangements that Jet has, so nothing new.

Specific T&Cs:
  • JetPrivilege members will earn JPMiles as per the above table only when they are flying on the codeshare flight numbers as cited above.
  • JetPrivilege members will earn Tier JPMiles and Tier Points on the codeshare flight numbers as cited above.
  • Earning of JPMiles is restricted only to the above mentioned classes. Travel under any other class will not be eligible for mileage earning unless specifically mentioned.
  • Codeshare flights will be counted for JetPrivilege tier upgrades and retention.
  • JetPrivilege Platinum tier members will earn 60% Premiere cabin bonus for travel in Business Class and 125% First Class cabin bonus for travel in First Class.
  • Codeshare flights are not eligible for redemption of JPMiles.
  • JetPrivilege members will earn JPMiles only when traveling on a flight marketed and operated by Jet Airways or marketed by Jet Airways but operated by Alitalia under a Codeshare Agreement.
  • To claim retro credit of JPMiles for your travel, please provide your copy of your boarding pass and ticket to the JetPrivilege Service Centre.
You can get more info here.

Jet has an existing partner-airline arrangement with Alitalia that allows earning JP miles on AZ flights (although the ones under codeshare will earn 100% miles, whereas others earn 50% or 100%, for economy class flights). JP members can also redeem JP miles on Alitalia operated flights. So all of that's already in place.

Personally, this new codeshare thingy makes limited sense to me, as I can't really see the point of getting from India to Italy via AUH, when another more efficient option exists (AI, particularly now with its Star Alliance pull!). Really, it seems like just an extended option to flying Jet and earning JP miles and tier points, over flying Air India or Alitalia direct from India to Italy. To me, it just seems like Jet is trying something for the sake of trying (and also for the sake of Etihad!!!).

Update:
I was able to figure out the reciprocal leg of the codeshare, after the above was published. So, AZ's MilleMiglia members will earn points in that program, for Jet Airways operated flights on the following routes:

Abu Dhabi to: Bangalore, Delhi, Kochi, Mumbai
Delhi to: Amritsar, Bangalore, Chennai, Udaipur
Mumbai to: Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata

That isn't much, either, but given the distances within India (and compared to those within Italy), chances are that these 9W flights may be used more than intra-Italy AZ flights. And for that reason alone, in theory, MilleMiglia members appear to be the gainers from this codeshare agreement.
