Marriott Rewards Plus rewards you for social media interactions

Marriott recently announced their summer promotion, Getaway bonus, which followed summer promotions by SPG (Earn Away, Get Away), Hilton HHonors (Double points or double miles), and IHG (Reel Summer). In addition, Marriott has also launched Marriott Rewards Plus Points, touted as a new way to reward yourself, in which you will earn Marriott Rewards points for

  • joining the promotion
  • sharing or retweeting Marriott's posts to your Facebook or Twitter feeds each day
  • checking into properties on Facebook or Foursquare every day you visit
  • posting a photo each day to Instagram and tagging it with a property’s location
  • using #LoveMarriottRewards, #RenHotels or #Autograph in your daily Facebook, Twitter and Instagram posts
  • liking and following select brands and properties in Facebook or Twitter

You will first need to register for this promotion here and entering your Marriott Rewards account number. The promotion offers the chance to earn up to 2,000 points in a 30-day period, and up to 12,000 points till 8 November 2014, till when this promotion will be active.

I registered for this a few days back, and the registration bonuses are now posting.

Though a stay is not required to earn points, not all brands and properties are eligible for this promotion. You can view the participating properties here. You can also can earn 250 points by liking or following specific properties or pages on Facebook and Twitter, with no limit to the number of likes or follows per day. So if you want to maximise your earnings, you'll need to like or follow eight properties, which will earn you 2,000 points (250 x 8) quite easily, which is the 30-day limit. However, you will need to stay following or liking those pages at least for a week, to be eligible for points.

What will 12,000 points get you? Turns out, a reasonable bit. A Category 2 reward costs 10k points, which means that maximising this promotion is worth at least one room night at a Cat 2 property, with 2k points to spare. Alternatively, a PointSaver award with a Cat 1 property comes in at 6k points a night, so that's 2 nights. You can look up the categories, etc here. Naturally, your chances at a better reward increase if you have more points in your Marriott Rewards account.

I stayed at the Ritz-Carlton Bangalore and the Renaissance Mumbai, a few months back, and so I have a small pile of Marriott Rewards points (and a free night certificate from their last Megabonus promotion) that I can make reasonable use of, particularly when combined with the potential points from this current offer.

  1. Hi Ankit - great question, and one I too wondered about initially! As I understand it, starting from the first day you like / follow / tweet with hashtag, you have 30 days to earn 2000 points (that's 8 activities). Activity 9 onwards doesn't get you points till those 30 days lapse. After that, you can re-like/tweet/etc with the days count being reset to 0 on day 31. So if you first liked on 1 May, then you can earn 2000 points till 30 May. And the clock resets on 31 May, giving you time till 29 June for a further 2k points. Does that help?
