A tale of two offers that aren't - Part 1: Trident India

There are currently two ongoing, independent offers for a stay 3 nights, pay for 2 promotion, both available only for payments made using American Express. However, if we scratch the surface, there seems to be a bit more to these offers.

The one I'm covering in this post, is the promotion by Trident Hotels in India, valid for stays between 1 April and 30 June 2014. The other is with Leading Hotels of the World (LHW), which I'll cover separately.

Firstly, this isn't really an Amex exclusive. Trident runs a virtually identical promotion, which doesn't require payment using Amex Cards. There are, however, some small differences (breakfast free on all days on the non-Amex offer, but shorter happy hours at the bar, etc), but nothing that you'd consider as a significant deviation from the Amex offer.

Secondly, here are the most important inclusions and exclusions of this 3-for-2 promotion, which is valid only at the hotels below:

It is important to note, that the third night complimentary offer is only on the room. It seems that breakfast will need to be paid for. However, there are some advantages of these offers, such as a complimentary additional room for 2 children up to 12 years of age, and the 15% off on spa therapies.

But here's another view. If you go on to Trident's website, you will be able to book rooms at far lower prices than what's available on this offer. Admittedly, I'm not sure what room categories are covered by the 3-for-2 offer, but there are some offers that are better than the 3-for-2 offer. For instance, take this one with Trident Jaipur, which includes a complimentary room for 2 kids up to 12 years of age, as well as breakfast AND DINNER for 2 adults, at a per-night rate that is lower than the effective rate under the Amex 3-for-2 offer.

At this rate, Rs 6,350++ x 3 nights = Rs 19,050++, which is a bit better than Rs 9,900++ x 2 nights = Rs 19,800++ (plus one night free), and a lot better if you consider that dinner is included with the first one (Rs 6,350++).

Similarly, there are better offers at Trident Bhubaneswar such as the one below, compared to Rs 12,950++ under the 3-for-2 offer.

Trident Udaipur can be had for Rs 7,500++ a night, which works out to be less expensive than Rs 12,000++ a night under the 3-for-2 offer.

Finally, the difference is even more stark with Trident Cochin.

In all, I'm not sure if these 3-for-2 offers are really worth it. So, if you're planning to book under this offer, my advice would be that you visit the hotel's / chain's website directly to see if there are better rates that they offer. You may well be surprised.
