My room at the Westin Mumbai - which could comfortably sleep 5 adults

Last week, I had work in Mumbai, and was glad to "open" my account for 2014 with SPG at the Westin Garden City in Mumbai. To be honest, I had a choice of that, the Hilton Mumbai (International Airport), and the Sofitel at BKC.

Nonetheless, the Westin worked because it was relatively closer to my place of work, compared to the other two, even if it involved a little bit of travel along both the morning and evening rush hour routes. And as I was going to spend only one night, it was fine, really.

I found the hotel to be an imposing building (even by Mumbai's standards), set it its own lush gardens. That the hotel overlooks Mumbai's only national park is a bonus, though my room had a road view, albeit on a high floor. The first thing I noticed was this at the entrance lobby, and to be honest, it reeked of class!

I checked in, and selected 250 SPG points as my SPG Gold gift - I was headed out anyway for drinks and dinner, and so I also had no need to access the internet. I had booked a standard deluxe room (lowest room category) but upon check in, I was told that as an SPG Gold member, I'd been upgraded to a higher category room. However, I suppose that was the biggest white lie of the new year. You see, the next category room at the Westin Mumbai is the Executive Club room, which is the same as the deluxe room but comes with complimentary lounge access - which I didn't get. But I wasn't going to be too fussed about this, because I had a breakfast meeting the next morning.

I went straight up to the room - not escorted to it, as most Hiltons in India do (and which is why I like them just a wee bit better than SPG hotels). And the first thing I saw when I opened the door, was the largest base category room I've ever had in my life! Take a look...

The room was massive. Particularly for a base category room. It was a king bed, and so could comfortably sleep 3 adults. Plus the L-shaped couch in the corner was large and wide enough to easily sleep 2 adults. In short, I could've had a party there!

The bathrooms were quite comfortable, though I'm not a big fan of sliding doors and multiple entry points. Bath supplies were pretty good too, though I forgot to snap pictures of those.

A quick shower, and I was down at the bar for a couple of drinks with a friend, before heading out. Exciting decor at the bar, though!

And the hotel lobby too...

After drinks and dinner outside, I was back in my hotel, but couldn't go to bed till way past midnight - 2 pm actually. There were loud noises from the next room, of the room door being repeatedly banged shut. I could stand this no more after about 45 minutes, and so I rang up the duty manager. She came up to my floor, installed a security guard just outside my room, etc. And then finally found out, that housekeeping had been cleaning up the adjacent room - really??? Your housekeeping staff tidies up at 1 am? Anyway, I'll leave you with what kept me company till the wee hours of the next morning.

[Update - March 2014]

  • What's good: overall room and bathroom size, bath amenities, F&B options
  • What could be better: knowledge of SPG program requirements, more friendly staff
