Trip report MAA-CCU on SpiceJet
There isn't normally much to write in terms of a trip report, when flying with a low cost carrier, that too in India, and particularly in the monsoon season. Except of course, turbulence and delays. So this trip report doesn't really add much to that theme, except for some possible nuggets of information.
Flight: SG 323 MAA-CCU | 2h 10m | 858 miles | Economy class
This was an official trip, so our travel desk at the office (agency implant, actually) booked my ticket. Sadly, they are not authorised to book any paid seating options (which I've written about earlier). I realised that I wanted to stretch out a bit, since I also had some work to get done, and so I had made up my mind the day before departure, to move to row 1. I also checked online, but all seats in rows 1 and 2 except 1A, were blocked, which I found incredible ! Imagine that many people paying paid cash for this privilege! Nevertheless, I found out on check in that 1A was still available, and so I paid cash for it. The story on board was, of course, quite different. 1B, 1D, 1E and 1F were unoccupied, as was all of row 2. So I moved over to 1F. The reason? At least 6 inches more leg room! I found that a bit weird. The legroom on 1D-1F is actually comparable to or more than what I've had on some 9W business class flights. The IFE then told me that 1D, 1E and 1F are usually not sold, but are kept blocked for VIP pax. Here are some pics to prove it.
Nugget 1: If you need the leg room, pay the Rs 500 - I found it worth every rupee. Perfect for a good snooze too! But only if your flights are for over 1 hour, else, not much value.
Take off was a few minutes ahead of schedule, and after I got done with my work, I started chatting with the passenger in 1D (moved over from 1C, after my advice!). Very interesting character, and I hope I meet him again ! And the weather was great too! At least till we got near Kolkata.
Nugget 2: If you like taking pictures when airborne, try and fly out of MAA post 9 am. Some of the views can be stunning!
My corporate booking entitled me to a meal, which was rather neat. Two paneer rolls with pickle, a small carton of fruit juice, and a mini Kit-Kat bar. A perfect snack at 10.30 am!
But please ignore the corny advertisement byline!
Nugget 3: SpiceJet actually has a decent meal selection to buy on board. If you can afford it, its worth the taste, though I found the portions a bit small - maybe because this wasn't a lunch or dinner serving.
The weather started to progressively worsen as we got close to CCU.
As a matter of fact, it had rained all of the previous 2 days, and storm clouds were visible. Thankfully, the landing was fine, and we got down safe.
More in the next post on the new CCU terminal, here.
