Jet Airways 7 days sale - closes 9 August 2013

This year marks the 20th year of operations for Jet Airways, and there have been several promotions this year, to celebrate this achievement. The latest is their offer for 7 lac seats (that's 700,000 seats) starting at Rs 1,777 per seat (~US$ 30). This is open for bookings made between 2 and 9 August 2013 (that's 7 days!) for travel starting 10 August 2013. The offer is valid for Jet Airways and Jet Konnect (their low-cost version) combined.

Now, lets see the fine (or not so fine) print.

The fares start at Rs 1,777, but that's only for selected routes (see below). All of these are very short haul sectors. For the longer ones, fares can go up to Rs 3,777 (~US$ 65). That's just for the base fare, plus YQ (fuel surcharge) and YR (service charge). You will always need to consider adding around Rs 1000 more per ticket, for service tax, passenger service fees, user development fees and what Indian airline companies cryptically call "Other charges and taxes".

  • Discount is applicable on One Way and in Economy.

  • Taxes will be additional, except Fuel Surcharge.

  • Date change permitted at a charge of INR 1200 per sector.

Remember - you will normally not find a ticket that is finally priced at Rs 1,777, no matter what the offer is titled. This, in my view, is typical of Jet Airways - lots of hype and buzz, but doesn't deliver on the "promise" in the end. Now, I do agree that a lot of the tickets they expect to sell under this offer, will be eventually priced lower than the normal fares that one could expect. But it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, at the end of it all, at least personally.

Conclusion

Earlier this year, Spicejet came out with a Rs 777 offer to celebrate 7 years of operation in India, where for Rs 777 (excluding taxes), Spicejet was selling This was extensively discussed in the local media at the time, and there were polarised views as well as everything in between. However, the offer was straightforward, and delivered as promised. With 9W, which always seems to have a smoke-and-mirrors approach to its various offers, the response to this offer needs to be seen.
