Hilton promotion for first quarter of 2016 is out

Hilton announced their first promotion for 2016. Called "Double your HHonors", this promotion is valid for stays between 1 January and 30 April 2016, and offers a choice of double HHonors points or double airline miles.

This is not very different from the promotion they offered last year. Members can choose either double HHonors base points or double airline miles for stays at qualifying hotels between January 1 and April 30, 2015. Registration is necessary, here.

There are no property exclusions, ie, all Hilton properties are participating in this promotion, which is fantastic!

Remember, that a choice once made cannot be changed during the promotion period, so be careful with your choice. Also if you're the kind that's interested in the fine print, see some FAQs here.

Points & points v/s Points & miles

HHonors members at the base level earn 10 points per eligible $ of spend at the base level. On top of that, members get 5 bonus points per eligible $ spent, for having chosen the Points & Points option, instead of Points & Miles. Silver, Gold and Diamond members earn 15%, 25% and 50% of base points as bonus points for their tier. This means, that by selecting the Points & Points option, you could earn a minimum of 25 HHonors points per $ (10 base + 10 promotion bonus + 5 P&P), going up to 30 HHonors points per $ for Platinum members (25 + 5 tier bonus), which is a good deal.

On the other hand, if you've chosen the Points & Miles option, you'd normally receive 10 HHonors points + 1 Airline mile per $ spent (participating airlines only). Under this promo, you'll receive a further 1 Airline mile per $ spent, as the promotion bonus. Given the dynamics, this makes sense only if you value your airline mile at 10x of what you value your HHonors points. I can't find such value with any airline that I usually fly (or would like to), and so it is Points & Points for me, always!

I've also had some fabulous stays at the Hilton Garden Inn, Baani Square (using points), and at Hilton Chennai and DoubleTree Gurgaon, though the last two weren't award nights.

In all, I believe the points are really worth it, and in any case, I see no downside to registering for this promotion.

What are your success stories with Hilton promotions and award nights?
