Extra JP miles (but you've got to buy them at Rs 1.25 per mile)
As with most FFPs, JetPrivilege also sells miles, for those who want to buy them. Currently, there's a promo happening, where you could get up to 40% more miles (that's only if you buy 6k or more miles), but you do get at least a 10% extra in any case. There's also their standard offer of transferring miles to other JP members, but this is quite pricey, and so I'm not going to deal with that in this post. Here are the details, however, on the miles purchase offer, which is valid till 30 September 2013.
What this essentially means, is that if you buy say 6000 miles, you get 8400 total. At Rs 1.25 per mile, that's Rs 7,500 (~US$ 130). This brings down the cost of a mile to Rs 0.89. At the other end of the scale, any purchase between 500 and 2000 only nets a 10% extra, with the cost of Rs 1.14 per mile. Now lets see how useful this could be.
Naturally, this is NOT any kind of a deal, if you're going to buy all or most of the miles you need for an Economy award, but a reasonably good deal for Business class redemptions . Put simply, the lowest price on 9W for DEL-BOM return, for dates that are three weeks out, is approximately Rs 9,600 in Economy and about Rs 54k in Business. In terms of miles, that's a fixed 16,800 in Economy and 33,600 in Business (plus Rs 2700 in taxes) - that equates to Rs 17,600 in Economy and Rs 32,600 in Business. So, virtually no value in Economy. But yes, there could be some reasonable value in buying these miles if you're looking to redeem in Business class. Remember, domestic redemptions are way more value than international ones, at least on 9W.
However, JP miles are worth something if you're using them for international upgrades, especially from Business to First. Problem is, 9W has a First class only on its LHR flights. On a random itinerary of BOM-LHR return in September 2013, this means you will need to pony up a fare difference of anywhere between Rs 60k to Rs 120k, between Business and First class revenue tickets. If using miles for the upgrade, that's a total of 108,000 miles, which can be bought for Rs 96,120. That may or may not make sense, depending on ticket prices available and the applicable conditions, at the time of your booking.

Conclusion
JP Miles are rarely useful for routine redemptions, except domestic ones (including upgrades), and in rare cases, international upgrades. The only other scenario I can imagine buying JP miles would be if I'm doing a redemption in business class or first, and I am falling short of miles by not much. You may also want to read:
